19. Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail

Location: Between Channahone on the east (D-6){E-9}and La Salle on the west. (D8){E-11}
Features:
  The trail follows the historic route of the I & M Canal, whch became the final link in an all-water route between the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico. The trail gives access to unparalleled scenic and historic sights. In the spring, wildlife and wildflowers are abundant along the trail. Great blue herons can be observed as they feed or nest near the park and along the canal banks.
Hiking: 
Sixty-one miles of trail along the old canal towpath for Hiking or Mountain bikes. The Channahon State Park on the east end, is a great starting point for a day on the trail.


2.  Aux Sable Access

Location: East of Morris, Illinois. 
Features:
The Aux Sable access contains three pieces of history right in the same area. Lock #8 of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, the locktender's house, and the rebuilt Aux Sable Creek aqueduct that was constructed to carry the canal over Aux Sable Creek.
Camping:  Primitive camping only: gear must be walked to site, no vehicular access. This site is limited to approximately five tents. Water and restroom facilities are located within walking distance. A camping permit must be obtained prior to camping at either Channahon State Park or Gebhard Woods State Park.


7.  Channahon State Park
Location: At Channahon Illinois [D-8]{D/E-11}
HIKING: The Channahon State park is a great starting point for a day on the trail. Sixty-one miles of trail along the old canal towpath gives access to unparalleled scenic and historic sights.
CAMPING:  Primitive tent camping only: gear must be walked to campsite, no vehicular access. Fire rings, picnic tables, and grills are located in the camping area. A drinking fountain and pit toilets are located within a short distance from the camping area.

Directions: From I-55: take the Rte. #6 Channahon exit. Turn west on Rte. #6 and continue into Channahon to Canal St.    Take a left on Canal and proceed to Story St. Turn right on Story into the park. If the parking area is full, continue on Canal St. one more block to the Jessup St. parking area.

12.  Gebhard Woods State Park

Location:  From Rte. #47 in Morris, turn west on Jefferson St (Jefferson will turn into Freemont St. a few blocks down).  Continue on Freemont St. to Ottawa St, turn left on Ottawa St. and the Park is located approximately a block and a half down on the left hand side.
Features:  this picturesque park is bordered on the south by the Illinois & Michigan Canal and to the north by Nettle Creek which gently flows along the perimeter and through the park adding to its natural beauty and abundance of wildlife

Camping:  Primitive tent camping only: gear must be walked (1/3 mile) to campsite, no vehicular access. Fire rings, picnic tables, and grills are located in the camping area. 


11.  William G. Stratton State Park

Location: Located in Morris.  [H-6]{I/J-8}
Features:
Named after an Illinois governor, the William G. Stratton State Park was developed in 1959 to provide boat access to the Illinois River. Any one of four public boat launching ramps will provide your start to an afternoon of boating, fishing or water-skiing. A jet ski launching area is located a short distance to the east of the boat ramps.
Trail Access:
The Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail provides a natural northern boundary for the William G. Stratton State Park. Sixty-one miles of limestone screened trail can be enjoyed by hikers, bicyclists, nature lovers and snowmobilers.
